The minister for Inner-City and Zongo Development, Hon. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid says Ghana has about one thousand and eighty (1,080) Zongo Communities in the country.
Hon Hamid has therefore called on residents of the Zongo areas to be patient with the government as it plans of developing all of such communities.
“I have promised that my government will make Ghana better and me, as the Inner City and Zongo minister, nothing gives me satisfaction than seeing that the lives of the people are improved,” he told Kaakyire Appea-Apraku, host of Power 97.9 FM’s Dwaboase on Thursday.
He noted the Ministry has already started some developmental works in Madina, and has rehabilitated some schools in Salaga as well as other communities where computer training and the construction of astro turfs for Zongo communities have commenced.
“My ministry has already started some development works like the Astro turfs… we have also provided furniture for schools. We have started computer training, coding training for Zongo boys among others, but we have plenty to do and in no time I believe everyone will benefit,” he added.
When asked if all the promises can be measured and fulfilled, Dr Hamid said:”We are just 18months and can’t achieve all we want to do in just 18months. Let be patience…We are working.”
The minister said there are plans to roll out a programme like the ‘Zongo for Peace and Development’ (ZOPAD) which seeks to ensure peace and development in all Zongos across the Country.
“My predecessor, Borniface Abubakar instituted ZOPAD. We are in dialogue with Zongo Communities, chiefs and Imams on how to educate the people in the communities constantly to maintain peace and unity in the zongo communities,” he explained.
He also noted that he had a meeting with his Chief Director yesterday and his director on ZOPAD to see how soon the programme can be commenced, adding that “I’m hoping that in the next few weeks, my ministry will roll ZOPAD out in all the 10 regions of Ghana.”
