Two suspects that were arrested by the Brong Ahafo Regional Police command in connection with a bloody attack on the Member of Parliament (MP) for Asunafo South MP, Eric Opoku, and some three NDC members last weekend will be arraigned before court today, Wednesday, April 4 2018.
Kwabena Acheampong and Yaw Boakye, who police have termed as key suspects in masterminding the attack were transferred to Sunyani from Sankore where they were arrested on Tuesday.
They are to appear before the Sunyani Magistrate Court, as Police investigations continue. The victims of the heinous crime are also expected to be in court as the suspects make their first appearance, police sources say.
Three people believed to be sympathizers of the NDC got injured after the armed men inflicted machete wounds on them at Sankore last Sunday.
The Asunafo South District Police Commander, DSP Akwasi Boakye, who confirmed the incident to XYZ News said the armed men caused damage to the Land Cruiser vehicle and two other vehicles of the MP which were parked at his residence as well as the main iron gate to the house.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Asunafo South constituency subsequently condemned the attack on the MP hours later.
The statement issued on Monday morning described the attack as unacceptable and said : “We solidiarise with him [the MP] on this unfortunate incident and call on the Police to do their utmost best to bring the perpetrators of this obnoxious act to book.”
However, the former Brong Ahafo Minister said he suspected the vandalism was caused by supporters of the ruling New Patriotic Party, a claim the Police would not give credence to.
Speaking to the media after the arrest of the two suspects, The Brong-Ahafo Regional Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), assured they would not deal with them acciording to their “political colours” but in accordance with the law.
