Former Chairman of Ghana’s Electoral Commission, Dr Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, has cautioned Electoral Management Bodies (EMB) in Africa against rushing new technology into electoral processes.
Dr Afari-Gyan who was speaking at the West Africa Election Observers Network (WAEON) Conference in Accra yesterday, said EC Commissioners and other stakeholders must carefully weigh the likely outcomes and consequences else they plunge the exercise and the security of states into chaos if such systems become compromised.

He said such platforms must take into consideration suitability of the technology to the local, social and environmental conditions, evaluate the cost implications for sustaining the technology and ascertain the level of trust of political parties and the electorate in the new technology.

The two-day conference on the theme: “The Increasing Role of Technology in Election Administration: Implications for Election Observer Groups”.
