The arrest and detention of three members of the Krowor Municipal Assembly ostensibly to prevent them from participating in the confirmation of the nominee for MCE has been condemned by Assemblymen across the country.
The arrest according to sources was on the orders of the MP for the area who is also the Minister for Fisheries, Elizabeth Afoley Quaye.
myxyzonline sources say the three Alfred Ahisah Laryea, Lawrence Borquaye and Robert Odikowere picked up in the afternoon and detained by some Police officers who also prevented them from making calls with their phones.
A statement issued by the Coalition and signed by Dr. Richard Fiadomor, and Hon BB Abdulai, General Secretary together with representatives of all the ten regions of Ghana, condemned the alleged action by the Fisheries Minister, Elizabeth Afoley Quaye and demanded their immediate release.
The statement was copied to the Minister for Local Government & Rural Development, the Auditor General, National Association of Local Authorities of Ghana (NALAG) and Civil Society Organisations

ARREST AND DETENTION OF ASSEMBLY MEMBERS IS AN AFFRONT TO LOCAL GOVERNANCE-COPAM CRIES OUT
COPAM has noted with extreme shock and dismay the needless and unwarranted arrest of three (3) Honourable Assembly Members of the Krowor Municipal Assembly Alfred Ahisah Laryea, Lawrence Borquaye and Robert Odiko allegedly upon the instruction of the Member of Parliament for the Krowor Constituency Hon. Elizabeth Afoley Quaye who also doubles as the Minister for Fisheries & Aquaculture with the singular aim of preventing them from participating in the confirmation of Mr. Joshua Bortey (MCE Nominee).
The arrest and detention of the Assembly Members ostensibly to deny them the opportunity to participate in the General Assembly Meeting to confirm the MCE Nominee, is totally unacceptable and a serious affront to the practice of Local Governance.
As Hon Assembly Members, they are bona fide members of the General Assembly and hence have a duty to actively participate in all deliberations on the floor of the house which among other things includes the confirmation of the MCE Nominee. For them to have been prevented from exercising their mandate as members of the General Assembly through their needless and unwarranted arrest is most unfortunate to say the least.
COPAM condemns the alleged action of Hon, Elizabeth Afoley Quaye in effecting the arrest of the Assembly Members in no uncertain terms and demands the release of these Assembly Members, which for all intent and purposes is politically motivated.
Assembly Members just like she the MP are the representatives of the people and hence should be allowed to perform their constitutionally mandated functions without any let or hindrance.
COPAM will continue to resist any attempt by the likes of Hon Elizabeth Afoley Quaye who have no respect for Local Governance and the mandate bestowed on Assembly Members by the good people of this country, by the use of crude methods to cow Assembly Members into submission and to also prevent them from carrying out their mandate.
COPAM will in the coming days petition the Parliamentary Select Committee on Local Government and Rural Development on the alleged conduct of Hon. Elizabeth Afoley Quaye, whilst we also consider legal redress for the affected Assembly Members.
