Former president John Mahama has jabbed the Akufo-Addo administration for stuffing his government with people he has described as ‘family and friends’ contrary to what he preached when he was a candidate for the NPP.
The former president who was addressing NDC sympathisers after a ‘Unity walk’ in Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region, said although he did not engage in a ‘family and friends’ government, Akufo-Addo, a then candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) castigated him for allegedly employing his family members and friends into his administration, but has turned to do what he preached against.
“When we were in government they said the size of government is too high [and] we must reduce the size of government then when you come into government they appoint 110 ministers and 998 staffers and they say it’s not about quantity its about quality. Who determines quality? …when they are out of government, even when you are not doing family and friends they say it is a family and friends government then when they come into government they appoint all their relatives into government,” he remarked.
Mr Mahama said he could have employed many of his relatives into his government but he did not do that, adding that, although the NPP criticised him over that, they have ended up practising it.
“When you talk [about the size of the NPP government], they say it doesn’t matter it’s whether they are qualified. Who doesn’t have relatives who are qualified? I have plenty of relatives who are qualified and could have served in my government, but the fact that you are a president does not mean you should load your government with your relatives,” Mr Mahama added.
Things Are Hard For Ghanaians
The former president also punched the Akufo-Addo government for reneging on its responsibility to make life easy for Ghanaians, describing the NPP administration as “Super incompetent”.
He said Ghanaians are not feeling the enjoyment Nana Akufo-Addo promised them in the run up to the 2016 elections.
“Let me say that things are hard. one of the reasons that they gave that people shou;ld vote us out of office was that life was hard. Today, life is even harder and what is this government offering? One of the tags they put on us very successfully was that we were an incompetent government. I must say if you look at what this government has done so far in the one year and 3 months, if that is what they call competence, I call it super incompetence. The government should be up and doing,” said Mr Mahama.
