A former Deputy Minister of Communications under the erstwhile Mahama adminstration, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has taken the Akufo-Addo led Government on for failing to strengthen the economy as was promised Ghanaians.
The opposition NDC Parliamentary candidate for the Abura Aseibu Kwamankese Constituency in the Central region said President Akufo-Addo, who was then leading the NPP prior to the 2016 elections, lied to Ghanaians about the economy under John Mahama and promised to transform the country through good policies yet delivering nothing close to that after assuming office three years ago.
In an interview with Inside Politics host Mugabe Maase on Power 97.9 FM, Mr Ofosu observed the NPP-led Akufo-Addo promised on page 13 of it’s 2016 manifesto that the NPP’s goal was to achieve a double GDP growth, ensure fiscal discipline and reduce government borrowing yet have failed to achieve that promise.
“Nana Akufo-Addo has failed on fiscal discipline because the figure was about 7% in their first year… Nana Akufo-Addo and Bawumia made noise about the NDC government’s 6.3% in 2016 but could not maintain that, ” Mr Kwakye Ofosu explained in Akan.
The former minister went on to expose the Akufo-Addo government, indicating that after maligning the Mahama administration for borrowing and promised to reduce borrowing and increase capital expenditure to GDP ratio, the NPP has failed to deliver that.
“The debt to GDP ratio has also risen from 56% in 2016 to over 60% currently under Akufo-Addo,” he stated.
On borrowing, Mr Kwakye Ofosu also noted the public debt, according to the Bank of Ghana, has risen from GHS 120 billion in 2016 to GHS 236.1billion as of March,2020 with little to show for the borrowing.
“There has been an increase of GHS 116.6 billion which means Akufo-Addo has doubled our entire debt of about 60 years in three and half years,” he added.
He noted, unlike the Mahama administration which undertook a massive infrastructural development, Akufo-Addo, after promising a massive development has failed in that regard, stressing that capital expenditure to GDP has dropped from 4.6% in 2016 to a paltry 1.5% in 2019.
“When Akufo-Addo tells you he has done better in the economy Ghanaians must note that it is a flat lie…they have failed in all the sectors of the economy contrary to the promises given Ghanaians,” said Kwakye Ofosu.
To him, the Mahama administration has a track record of developing all sectors of he economy because under his era as the head of the Economic Management Team during the the late Prof. Mills government, the country’s economy grew very well unlike under the NPP where the figures have slumped drastically, resulting in hardship in the country.
He concluded by saying the best president for Ghana is H.E John Mahama, and appealed to Ghanaians to vote for the NDC in the 2020 elections to continue with it’s unfinished better programmes.
