The Electoral Commission (EC), which seems to be obsessed with compiling a new voters’ register as a ‘thank you’ package for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the December elections, is advancing its agenda to be an impediment on the victory path of the opposition NDC.
The EC has planned to disenfranchise most supporters of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ashanti region even before the country goes to the polls.
A renowned lawyer and member of the NDC, Edudzi Cudjoe Tamekloe has intercepted the ‘evil’ plans by the Jean Mensah-led EC to have the NDC lose votes in the Ashanti region– the stronghold of the Akufo-Addo led NPP.
In an interview with host Mugabe Maase on Inside Politics on Power FM, Mr Tamekloe stated that the EC had planned to ” eliminate non Akans from the new register that will result in voter suppression in the Ashanti region.”
“Yes we have that information already,” said the NDC man who explained that there is a clandestine move by the EC and the NPP to have their agents challenge persons who do not bear Akan names and ensure their data are not captured should they [the EC] succeed with its plans to compile a new electoral role.
“We have at our custody that plan…When you go to register in Kumasi and you mention your name as Edudzi Cudjoe Tamekloe, they [NPP polling agents] will say you don’t belong here. If you mention your name as Mugabe Maase, they’ll say your name suggests you are a Moosi man so you’ll be challenged and in the end your name won’t be in the register,” Edudzi Tamekloe disclosed.
He said the plan was to maximize the votes of President Akufo-Addo who polled 1.5 million votes in the 2016 elections.
He further explained that, the ruling Government had calculated that since the NDC’s votes keep increasing in the region in the past elections, they could not afford to see them soar this year following the Akufo-Addo Government’s incompetence and neglect of the region since assuming office.
But like the NDC leadership has stated before, Edudzi Cudjoe Tamekloe said the party will leave no stone unturned in their quest to expose the EC and resist its “evil plans”.
New Register in June?
The NDC has hinted that despite the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic, the EC has planned to begin the compilation of the controversial register in June.
According to the NDC Director of elections, Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, the EC has informed ECOWAS that it is ready to begin the exercise next month at the blind side of the political parties in the country.
“EC’s Director of Elections has told ECOWAS in a video call that they will compile the register in June. We have the details here,” he said on Inside Politics on Monday.
He said the EC had not informed the political parties of its time table for the year yet is bent on compiling a new electoral roll, regardless of warnings from experts that the exercise can escalate the COVID-19 pandemic in Ghana.
He said the required documents for the controversial exercise did not make sense.
