Policy Think Tank, CARE for Free and Fair Elections (CARE-Ghana) has alleged that the Electoral Commission (EC) has gagged its Advisory Committee and prevented it from doing its work.
According to CARE Ghana, the EC has succeeded in rendering the 21-member Eminent Advisory Committee, which was inaugurated to enhance engagement and interactions between the electoral management body and the public ahead of the elections, useless in the wake of violence that has characterised the ongoing voter registration exercise.
The committee chaired by a former Chairman of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Justice Emile Short, has not reacted to the pockets of violence in some parts of the country.
CARE Ghana believes the committee has not been able to maintain an open-door policy that invites and responds to the concerns and interests of the citizens despite the controversies that preceeded the registration exercise.
The group says the EC only assembled the members who are of enviable repute into “a surreptitious agenda to silence the conscience of our society to allow the EC” manipulate” the 2020 general elections.
“…we have observed that, the reasons adduced by the EC for constituting this committee is deceptive. Obviously, every information have been passed on from the EC to the general public by the Commissioners themselves or the Communication outfit of the EC,” CARE Ghana Executive Secretary David Kumi Addo said in a press statement.
“We respectfully call on these very respectable leaders to disentangle themselves from this dubious committee and immediately resign to safeguard their image and protect their hard earned reputation,” he added.
Below is the statement;
ELECTORAL COMMISSION GAGS THE EMINENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE – “CARE” GHANA
The Eminent Advisory Committee (EAC) has been dormant since it was constituted by the Electoral Commission (EC). The committee’s failure to perform its function is occasion by the EC and accounts for the intransigence and lawlessness the Electoral Commission is
engaged in in the ongoing registration exercise. Obviously, the Electoral Commission’s decision for constituting this committee is not as stated by the EC, but a surreptitious agenda to silence the conscience of our society to allow the EC manipulating the 2020
The EC on the 3rd December, 2019 inaugurated a 21 member Eminent Advisory Committee headed by former Chairman of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), Justice Emile Short. Other members include, Chairman of the National Peace Council, Most Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Asante, National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, Ameer of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community Maulvi Mohammed Bin Salih,
Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, Ghana, Rt. Rev Paul Boafo.
The others are, former Chief of Staff Nana Ato Dadzie, former member of the council of state Gifty Afenyi Dadzie and President of the National Charismatic Christian Churches Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, General Secretary of the Christian Council of
Ghana, Rev Dr Cyril Fayose, President of the Ghana Bar Association,
Tony Forson, Head of the Pentecostal Council Rev. Dr. Paul FrimpongManso, a former Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Most Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Martey, a Gender Advocate, Dr. Rose Mensah-Kutin, and President of the GJA, Roland Affail Monney.
The claim by the EC that, just by the mere constitution of this committee, the EC will be demystified and its independence proven is neither here nor there. The questions that beg for answers are, what is mysterious about the EC and who is questioning its independence that needs the presence of these eminent members of our society. In our view, the clear objective for forming the Eminent Advisory Committee is to gag the rather vociferous and assertive individuals from the epic religious and academic background.
Also, according to the EC, the rationale for forming this committee is to enhance engagement and interactions between it and the public for the 2020 general election.
However, we have observed that, the reasons adduced by the EC for constituting this committee is deceptive. Obviously, every information have been passed on from the EC to the general public by the Commissioners themselves or the Communication outfit of the EC.
We respectfully call on these very respectable leaders to disentangle themselves from this dubious committee and immediately resign to safeguard their image and protect their hard earned reputation. Their continues membership to this committee may suggest that, they advice, condone, support and are involved in every decision taken by the EC.
It also means that they endorse the decision by the EC to revoke the citizenship of some innocent Ghanaian citizens aimed at preventing them from participating in the 7th December, 2020 general elections.
