Gov’t To Set Up Management Units In All Basic Schools

The Education Ministry is to set up Management Units in all basic schools to enable teachers with leadership potentials to assume leadership roles within the shortest possible time.

This was announced by a Deputy Minister of Education in charge of Pre-Tertiary Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum at the launch of the Ghana ASCD and Erickson partnerships programme.

The Minister bemoaned the length of time taken before a teacher could apply for any leadership position asserting that “setting up management units means it will no longer take 30 years before a teacher could apply to become a headmaster or head teacher.”

This project which is expected to start in September will identify potential leaders among the teaching staff who will be taken through the processes and eventually become leaders. It thus places a call on teachers to improve upon the standards of teaching and learning in schools.

The ASCD and Erickson Institute Partnerships programme aims at supporting educators regardless of their years of service, positions or titles. It is committed to helping educators enhance their crafts and enhance their roles by providing high-quality, research-based resources and support they can trust.

About ASCD

ASCD is dedicated to excellence in learning, teaching, and leading so that every child is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, and challenged. Global engagement is one of ASCD’s five areas of focus so that all students are prepared for an interconnected global society.

The Globally Competent Learning Continuum supports educators in achieving this important task. The free, online self-reflection tool designed for educators of all grade levels and subject areas breaks down the competencies required to cultivate global competence in students into 12 discrete disposition, knowledge, and skill elements. For each element, educators rate themselves as nascent, beginning, progressing, proficient, or advanced. The Globally Competent Learning Continuum also serves as a resource repository.
