Former president H. E John Mahama has commiserated with the family of the the late Member of Parliament for Mfantseman Constituency, Ekow Quansah Hayford.
The MP was shot dead by suspected armed robbers near Mankesim in the Central region when returning from a campaign trip in the early hours of Friady.
In a message to console the family of the NPP man, shocked Mahama said the circumstances under which the MP died is “most despicable act” and called on the security agencies to invsetigate the death immediately.
In a chilling account of how the calm legislator died, an eye witness believed to be a member of the MP’s party, the NPP, said the MP was returning home from a campaign trip when he was attacked on the Abeadze-Dominase-Abeadze Duadzi-Mankessim Road.
The eye witness is heard in audio tape in circulation saying the sad incident happened around midnight Friday, explaining that they saw that the road ahead of them had been blocked. He added their driver slowed down because they thought there was an accident scene ahead of them.
“When we moved a step further, we saw that they [robbers] were with guns. Ekow Quansah Hayford was seated at the front seat of the vehicle then he began to scream ‘armed robbers, armed robbers’, so he asked, ‘What do we do?…We decided to manoeuvre and find a way to escape but the robbers shot our vehicle and it stopped abruptly,” the eyewitness recounted.
He continued that the 6 armed men approached their vehicle and asked them to hand all their valuable items which he did.
“They took my phone and money and I heard them asking the MP to bring his phone and money when he responded that his money…his money and they pulled him out of the vehicle.”
The eye witness said he then sneaked into the nearby thicket as they armed men turned their attention to the MP.
“I heard them tell him that you politicians are the reason we are suffering in this country after he revealed himself to them as the MP of the area,” he added “I could hear multiple gunshots while I was in the bush for about an hour and half.”
Police have since launched investigations into the murder while the body of the MP has been deposited at the Saltpond Government Hospital.
Tributes have also been pouring in for the late MP, while many bemoan the heightening insecurity in the country as elections draw closer.
