MP Raises Red Flag Over Speaker’s Action To Stifle Minority In Parliament

Member of Parliament for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak

The Minority in Parliament yesterday (March 8), refrained from taking part in discussions on the floor of the House, in protest against what they described as ill treatment from the Speaker, Professor Mike Oquaye.

Speaking on our news and current affairs programme ‘Behind the News’, Member of Parliament (MP) for Kumbungu, Ras Mubarak said the Speaker’s action is becoming one too many.

Mr Mubarak said preventing the Minority from advancing debates on the floor is a threat to democracy.

The MP for Suhum, Frederick Opare Ansah however justified the Speaker’s action, saying he was enforcing the rules of the House.

He said even if the Speaker ignores the Minority, it should not lead to a walk out or sit down strike.
